Singer-songwriter Sagiri Sól will release her new single “wishing you unhappiness” on Wednesday, October 7.
The track is a collaborative song born from a session with Los Angeles-based producer Franco Reid, who is also known for his collaborations with U2, Paul Banks (Interpol), Channel Tres, Wisp, After, and others. Built around a mid-tempo, atmospheric indie rock sound, the track is characterized by Sagiri Sól’s poignant melodic sensibility and cleverly twisted lyrics.
The lyrics weave together romantic experiences from Sagiri Sól herself and her friends. Deliberately replacing the “happiness” that would normally follow “Wishing you” with “unhappiness,” the song humorously expresses irritation and sarcasm toward an ex, while also portraying the feelings of not being able to completely dislike them and the honest desire that still longs for them somewhere deep down. Through Sagiri Sól’s distinctive perspective, the song captures the unbalanced emotions of love, where affection and dislike, lingering attachment and anger, are intertwined.
Sagiri Sól Comment
I wrote this song by mixing together romantic experiences I heard from several friends with experiences of my own.
Normally, you would expect “happiness” to come after “Wishing you,” but in this song, I deliberately wish for “unhappiness,” making the title somewhat twisted and sarcastic.
As I listened to all kinds of stories, I started wondering whether that very imbalance might be both the fun and the bitterness of love, and I naturally arrived at these words.
Give it a listen while thinking of that person who annoys you, but who you somehow still love anyway!
